Cockroaches need three things: warmth, moisture and food scraps, all of which a kitchen or bathroom provides in abundance. They're mostly nocturnal and squeeze into gaps as thin as a coin, so they can be established behind appliances, inside wall cavities or under floors for a long time before anyone spots one during the day — which is usually a sign the population has grown large enough to spill out of its hiding spots.
